MooseCoons - a Brief History

Moosekitty was my first Maine Coon; was in fact the first cat I ever paid money for! I had researched the breed and knew I had to have one, and I have never regretted this decision!

I had had a mutt girl named Pooch (the Wonder Kitty), who displayed a number of Maine Coon traits, though I didn't know it at the time. When she died in my arms at the ripe old age of 19, I was devastated at the loss. A few years later, after I had bought a house and decided the time was right to buy my chosen kitty, I looked for a Coon. I got some names from my vet from a breeders list and that's how I found Trisha Swisher and Kanab cattery. I went to her house and played with a dozen kittens and fell in love with this patched brown tabby girl who reminded me of my Pooch.

She became Kanab Luanne Tlingit Moosekitty and changed my life in a big way :-) Though I had no plans on breeding at the time, after living with her for several months and being more in love with this cat and her antics every day I began talking with Trish about the possibility of having a litter.  After many many converstations, Trish agreed to mentor me with Moosekitty's breeding. I was very unsure of how far I could go with breeding, so for the first litter we registered the kittens under the Kanab name - that way if I felt overwhelmed or not up to the challenge, I could stop there. Needless to say I was hooked. Moosekitty and I did okay with the whole kittening process and I registered my own cattery name with CFA; since Moosekitty was the beginning, my cattery is named in her honor - "MooseCoons"

Since these very humble stumbling beginnings, I have learned so much about breeding and showing this magnificent breed.  I still believe there is none to compare with the Maine Coon.  Years of having Maine Coon kittens in the house have brought me great joy and great heartache.  The adult Maine Coons share my daily life, my lap, my heart.

Pooch the Wonder Kitty

Okay, knowing SOOOO much more now,
of course Pooch doesn't in any physical
way resemble a Maine Coon, except
she was a big girl <lol>  She did have
many of the personality traits and lived
to age 19, still playing with string up to
her last weeks.  She was my true
soul-kitty, the ultimate love.
No critter will ever replace her in my
heart, so I keep plenty of furballs
around now to ease the ache of
 missing her.

Egads, is that sappy or what??
